Wild Cucumber

also known as Balsam Apple, Lace Pants

A native vine, wild cucumber forms delicate greenish-white flowers in mid-summer, followed by a soft-walled but prickly oval fruit with hard dry seeds inside. Once ripe, the bottom of the fruit opens, and the seeds fall out. Wild cucumber is an annual, growing from seed each year. The “Echin-” of its genus name means “spiky”, coming from the Greek word “echinos” meaning hedgehog. “-cystis” comes from the word “kustis”, meaning bladder, bag, or pouch. Hedgehog bladder. Its nickname “Lace Pants” is inspired by the appearance of the dried fruit. All parts of the plant are considered toxic.”
