It’s fortunate the “doll’s eye” berries of the white baneberry plant don’t look very appetizing — they contain cardiogenic toxins that can have an immediate and dangerous sedative effect on the human heart. All parts of the plant are considered poisonous. The species name “pachypoda” means “thick-footed” and refers to the stems connecting the berries to the plant, which thicken and become bright red as it matures.”
